Real People, Real Lives!

At the time of their entry into the program John and Jane Smith were both unemployed and Jane was pregnant with their fourth child. John was struggling to find work that would not exacerbate his back injury. Jane had never finished high school and could not find a job. Their three children were bright, articulate, and fun but the Smith’s would not be able to shelter them from the hard life around them for very long.

John quickly became involved in Job Search through the Education & Employment caseworker at Third Street Alliance and was able to find a job at a local school. Jane signed up for GED classes and worked hard to get her diploma. Their fourth child was born near the Christmas holiday.

With help from Third Street Alliance shelter staff, the Smith’s found subsidized housing for their family. They moved into their own home, with enough space for all of their children. John is still employed and enjoys his job. Jane has received her GED and will be able to find work once their baby is a bit older. Most importantly, they now have the skills they need to succeed on their own. They have the confidence and the tools to help themselves if they ever come upon hard times again.
